As a makeup artist, the Ultimate goal is to ensure my clients skin, looks like skin. To be more accurate, their skin but better. I made a video on the subject You’re skin but better with some additional tips and tricks on creating the perfect minimal base and I also have another video on ‘No Makeup Makeup’ for every budget perfect for January viewing.

The perfect light weight foundation, should just even out the skin tone slightly, feel light as air, and still allow the skin’s natural texture to show. It should only enhance the skin and make you look like you do when you’re having a great skin day.

The formulations I look for in my kit are those that add a youthful appearance, create balance in the skin and don’t look obvious that you’re wearing makeup. These days we really are spoilt for choice, as formulations continue to improve and become increasingly better performance wise.

These are the foundations I go to in my pro kit when I want the freckles to show, when I want to see the skin. They are tried and tested and never let me down, so if you’re on the hunt for a foundation that’s lightweight or more natural looking in finish, these are the foundations for you.

Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation – I love this liquid foundation, and I’ve been using it a lot in my recent videos on myself as I find it a natural foundation that allows you to build slightly where you need a little bit extra but without ever looking cakey. This has a subtle glow to it without feeling sticky, or noticeable that it’s on your skin. This is a great shout for normal to dry skin.

MAC Next To Nothing Face Colour – Possibly the most light weight coverage foundation MAC have ever created, this is such a modern formulation that glides on. A liquid that just gives the slightest amount of coverage and a little bit of a glow too. If you want to ensure you’re not covering your freckles this is a great option, perfect for all skin types and comes in a great variety of shades.

YSL Le Cushion Encre De Peau – One of my favourite discoveries of the past few years, and one that I have repurchased three times now! The cushion compact makes it incredibly easy to use on the go and I even like the velvet feel of the cushion applicator with this. It’s not particulary dewy, but pairs so nicely with light reflective primers. I love how this just evens out the skin really well with such a minimal amount of product. Great for all skin types, unless you have very dry skin.

Estee Lauder Double Wear All Day Glow BB – If you’re looking for a light weight base that lasts, you know the Double Wear line is a safe bet. BB creams are always great in that you can apply them much the way you would do your normal moisturiser, just smooth over the skin and blend with fingers. Fuss free and easy to use. Great for all skin types.

Giorgio Armani Maestro Fusion Makeup – The formula of this is like liquid satin. I love this formula for adding minimal coverage and creating a unified veil of colour to even out the skin tone. This has a satin finish that makes it very undetectable on the skin. Perfect for those with normal to oily skin.

Glossier Perfecting Skin Tint – The easiest to apply because of its translucency. This is the perfect base for people who don’t want to look like they’re wearing makeup, for those that want the lightest of coverage. Despite its translucency this still offers up a lot of glow and leaves the skin very dewy. Great for dry to normal skin types.

Koh Gen Doh Aqua Foundation – Probably my most recent discovery and a makeup artist favourite. A liquid foundation that allows you to build natural looking coverage where you need it with a hint of glow and a radiant finish. This blends like a dream and really moisturises the skin. Best for normal to dry skin.

Chantecaille Future Skin – This is a gel texture that acts very similarly to the Giorgio Armani Maestro in that it becomes apart of the skin. It never looks like its sat on top, but it really meshes with the skin in a very believable looking way. This has a very slight glow to it but future skin is a great description of the product. It feels modern, lightweight and offers a light veil of coverage that evens and perfects. I like this for most skin types with the exception of very dry or very oily.
