This has been a long time coming, and I can’t tell you how excited I am to reveal the new improved HMIU. It’s taken a long time for me to find a cohesive vision for my site. I guess it’s an on going work in progress.
When it comes to describing my job, for a long time I’ve said im a ‘makeup artist’, and I feel like the older I get, the more I focus on the last word out of those two: the ‘artist’ part. I think the word artist can easily come across as pretentious and like you take yourself too seriously but it’s the best way I can describe what I am right now and how I feel about my work today.
Makeup is one medium I use to express myself and it’s a medium I love to the ends of the earth and back again, but I’m also finding so much pleasure in photography and art direction and really wanted to bring those elements into the new blog too.
When I was younger, I dreamed of being a world renowned makeup artist. I wanted to be the next Kevyn Aucoin. That’s not to say that’s not a wonderful goal to have, and I still love being a Makeup Artist, but I think as my career had progressed, it became more waiting for someone else to tell me my work was good, irrelevant of whether or not it made me happy or was the direction I wanted to go in.
I’ve had to learn how to be more flexible with what I want from my career, and bring it back to where my passion comes from and accept that certain things I thought I wanted or were striving for, just aren’t as important to me anymore. It had a lot to do with craving approval, and letting go of that need for recognition is where I’ve found the love for what I do again. Maybe some of you can resonate with that feeling?
I needed a place to be creative or if you like be an ‘artist’ without having to get it right, please a client, or represent a certain ideal of beauty. I love YouTube and have no intention of stopping, but at times can find it limiting both in my limited technical capabilities and in what it limits my imagination too because everything is explained step by step. So I’m crazy excited to have this blog as my creative playground.
“I also love that this a personal diary of what inspires me and a nice way of record keeping those inspirations and experimentations”
I love art directing, painting, writing and creating in general, and for me, this blog enables me freely to do that. The relaunch has given me so much time to think about what I would want to read, what I want to experiment with and it’s giving me so much joy! It’s been so good to remind myself what I makes me happy, why I love makeup, what inspires me and what I want to do more of, both within the beauty industry and via other creative outlets.
So while my day job mainly consists of working as a makeup artist, I am choosing to (without judging myself or wanting to laugh out loud) think of myself as more of an artist, Persuing and exploring different forms of artistic expression.
“Beauty to me is about inclusivity and I believe everyone should be able to express themselves with makeup in any way that makes them feel epic”
SO WHATS NEW ON THE BLOG?
BEAUTY – HMIU will always be beauty focused, it’s still one of my greatest passions. You can still expect to see reviews, tips and tricks I use on a daily basis, as well as your beauty questions answered, how to’s and more. I just wanted to open it up to beauty as a more general concept, so in addition to the latter we can have open discussions about beauty topics, and look at what’s happening in the industry and how that affects you.
INTERVIEWS – You’ll notice there’s a new category Interviews; I love reading interviews by people who inspire me, and I wanted to bring that element into the blog, and bring you some of the awesome people I have had the pleasure to meet, some I’m even lucky enough to call friends. I also wanted to bring you other industry professionals and share their experience with you. (I’m also a little nosy, and love nothing more than delving into other peoples makeup bags!)
SHOP – I have also added a shop, making it easier to find out exactly what I’m using in my pro kit, and you can now shop my Instagram, so if you see a makeup look you like, you can purchase the entire look on that post with ease. Of course you don’t have to use my shop links, but I get so many questions about looks I create on Instagram and wanted one place that gave you the answers you were looking for, without waiting for me to get back to you.
LIFE – The life category has given me the flexibility to share more behind the scenes elements with you, both with work and life in general, and the things that I’m passionate about, especially travelling and how that inspires my work as a makeup artist.
VIP AREA – A new improved secret members only area (completely free) which gives you access to mini video tutorials, cheat sheets, beauty downloads, newsletters, free makeup courses and more. All the tools you need to become the master of your own makeup, whether you’re a wanna be MUA or a beauty lover looking to improve your own makeup skills, this is an area just for you, that you can go back to any time with your own login. Sign Up Here.
With regards to makeup, My only wish is that you have fun with it. Maybe it empowers you, or is a sense of escapism? Or maybe it’s just something you put on in the morning to feel a little more perky and don’t give it much thought, no matter your reasons, enjoy it!
My hope is this blog is a place to inform, inspire and entertain. I hope you have fun reading it.
