There’s some people I meet in my work who I just connect with instantly, and my lovely friend Courtney is definitely one of them! She’s smart, funny and incredibly warm. Working as a model, Courtney, upon her travels has tried and tested some of the best natural beauty products out there, so I knew I had to get her and her makeup bag on the blog. You may recognise her from a video we did together, discussing in depth our favourite natural beauty finds. Courtney uses a mix of beauty brands but has found herself moving towards more natural beauty brands and she’s constantly introducing me to more and more, many of which are completely new to me, so thanks for that Courtney! Over to you…
I grew up in Perth Australia, my earliest memories of beauty would be watching my mum, getting ready at home, she always had a bright red lipstick every day, so she would put her face on but it would always comprise of a bright red lip, in a shade very similar to Nars Red Square but I can’t remember exactly who it was by.
Modelling was always something that interested me growing up, but it wasn’t until I came back from studying in France for a year that someone approached me in a cafe, at the time I was about 21, and they gave me the idea that I could pursue it, and then it wasn’t until maybe a year later, I was walking in the streets of Perth, and walked past an agency with my friend, and we just walked up. I enquired about TV presenting, and they said well its Perth so not much happens in that area but you’ve got the look for modelling so why not give that a go.
My love for natural beauty stems from a passionate interest in healthy eating and once I became aware of what I was putting in my body, it just was a natural progression to make sure that I was putting things topically on my body that were going to be healthy and not give me more toxins, given our skin is the largest organ it became more and more apparent that it was really important to me, and also with all the pollution we absorb all ready I just wanted to make sure it was super clean.
I think there are a lot of misconceptions about being a model, it’s definitely a glamourised idea, and I think that theres a lot more hard work, discipline and organisation that goes in to it that people don’t really realise. There’s a lot of sacrifices that we make, to be away from home, families, all the travel, long hours, plus we have to do the long hours and look good and feel good as that translates onto camera, so, yes, theres a lot more work involved but there’s also some great benefits as well that make it worth while at the end of the day.
It’s taught me to value myself, you’re seen in such a critical judgemental way by others constantly, that it really forces you into learning what you have to offer personally and that you have to always go back to that as being your compass and your guide because if you don’t, you end up not being able to endure it and withstand it.
Beauty is radiating something from within, and being a good soul. Everyone is beautiful in their own way.
Being a model you get so much makeup put on you all the time that you learn to use as little as possible during your down time, but I’d say keeping it simple is really effective. I usually just choose to put a lip on, I don’t use foundation, I cover up the under eye area and around the nose and that creates a uniform sort of complexion and look. And then just a simple layer of mascara and a little highlighter on the top of cheek bones, cupids bow and highlighting there can create an awesome look without all the bells and whistles.
My morning beauty routine starts in my shower, using an IS Clinical Cleanser on a hand towel and then I’ll usually use a serum with vitamin C in to protect my skin from the LA weather, then I use my sunscreen, and then I just apply the makeup look mentioned previously. If I’m going out at night I might add a darker lip, and tightline on the inner lash line with my Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eye Crayon eyeliner.
