Last weekend, me and Dave headed off to San Diego for the weekend. Nothing about this trip was planned, and to be honest, it’s what made the trip a genuine adventure, in a good way. Initially we thought we would Air B & B it, but naturally we had left things pretty last minute so we decided we’d just head in that direction. Knowing it was only couple of hours drive from LA, we figured we’d just get a cheap motel or try and get a last minute booking hotel, or if we had really had to, we could have just driven home again that night.
It was a beautiful sunny day as we drove down the freeway. I absolutely love road trips, it’s such a great way to see things, and you have the flexibility to stop wherever and whenever you want especially great if something along the way catches your eye. We decided to start our journey in La Jolla.
Thanks to Instagram stories, we had some great recommendations for food. We arrived around 3pm so went to grab a late lunch at Cody’s which has a great all day brunch, and then we went for a walk around the little town with our cameras. La Jolla felt very quaint, families sat picnicking on the grass, people eating ice-cream as they walked to the beach, but the main attraction had to be the seals relaxing on the rocks and along the sea front. I couldn’t believe how close we could get to them, they were super chilled and very entertaining. We spent a couple of hours wondering around aimlessly in the golden light of magic hour. The colour palettes were amazing.
THE PENDRY HOTEL
My favourite new discovery has to be an app called Hotels Tonight, that a friend had told me about a few days before our trip. After a lovely few hours in La Jolla we decided it would also be great to see more of downtown San Diego so without any expectation we had a quick look on the app and couldn’t believe the Pendry Hotel had a room on the app for a ridiculously good price, so we booked the room, and headed Down Town, about 20 minutes drive from La Jolla.
The hotel was out of this world! Like I said, we had not planned to be staying in a swanky hotel so the whole trip became even more exciting within minutes of arriving at the hotel, and to our amazement the lovely receptionist even upgraded us to a suite! It was a proper Cinderella moment. The Pendry is a luxury hotel that feels modern yet inviting. It’s contemporary without being pretentious and our suite had the most incredible view. We arrived around 6pm and after checking in, decided we’d head to the hot tub for a margarita and attempt a plan for the rest of the evening.
DRINKS AT FIFTH & ROSE
So after an hour in the hot tub with margaritas, Guoc & chips, we decided the plan was to screw the plan, and keep doing what we were doing as it seemed to be working for us both. We didn’t really fancy dinner as we ate lunch so late and had snacks at the pool, so decided just to capture some of the beautiful lights from the window of our room and after a little wonder around down town, we headed back to get ready for some drinks at the hotel bar Fifth & Rose which seemed really popular with the locals.
The thing I’m loving about these ‘mini’ weekend away trips, is playing with different makeup. I’ve tried to make it a habit now, since we did our trip to Palm Springs, to take a few pieces of makeup with me that I either haven’t worn in donkeys years or something new, so that I can bring back the joy of makeup and experimenting with makeup that compliments my mood, the things around me, and how they inspire me.
It’s fair to say I had worn my usual attire of clean skin with my standard brown liner for the majority of the day, but after seeing all the amazing lights from our hotel window I knew I wanted something that would play with light, and luckily one of the pieces I packed that I had been meaning to try for ages was this stunning Super Shock Ultra Glitter eye shadow from ColourPop called Bouncy, a beautiful gun metal grey/olive green with the tiniest hint of pink reflects. In every light it looked different, I loved how reflective this shadow was, and I choose to pair it with a Kohl Power Eye Pencil in Orpheus from MAC, a beautiful graphite tone to it to compliment the eye look and smoke it out a bit for the evening. I can’t recommend enough, taking a few ‘curve ball’ pieces of makeup with you next time you travel, it’s such a great way to get out of your comfort zone and try new things. I love the way the reflective shimmer also looked in front of the light of the fire from the fire pit at the bar…
BREAKFAST IN BED
If there’s one thing I love more than a nice hotel, it’s breakfast in bed… in a nice hotel. Despite a very luxurious lengthly sleep thanks to the incredible king size bed, I woke up feeling slightly worse for wear, thanks to the delicious cocktails I had enjoyed at the bar the night before. There was only one thing for it, and that was pancakes with bacon, salty and sweet, the best combo when your hung over! The morning bought with it more exceptional views of San Diego. I also loved the gigantic shower, and the body products stocked in the room made everything feel like a spa experience. I needed a lot of blush that day, and thanks to Chanel Les Beiges Blush No 21 a gorgeous subtle coral cream in a stick that looked equally beautiful on the cheeks as it did on the lips, I at least looked like I had some colour back.
For the last leg of our little road trip we went to grab a coffee on Coronado Island, another short drive from Down Town San Diego. We walked to the beautiful beach and wondered aimlessly again with our cameras. We finished up at the Geisel Library as Dave had mentioned before the trip really waning to take photos of the library as it’s an incredible structure, very much like something from the future. Needless to say it was beautiful. We headed home early evening. I loved San Diego, I felt inspired, relaxed and I look forward to going back.
